History of the Firm
Sideris Kefalas Engineers P.C. (SKE) was founded by Terry C. Sideris, P.E. after working as an engineer in the aerospace industry for many years. His vision was to participate in the building boom that was the rebirth of New York City in the eighties.
As an adjunct Professor of Engineering at the New York Institute of Technology in Manhattan, Terry tapped into the talents of his students and at the same time gave them the opportunity to learn more than just what the textbooks could provide. This symbiotic relationship formed the beginning of a successful business.
Two major additions early on were Terry’s son, Chris M. Sideris P.E., and Filolaos T. Kefalas P.E., both graduates of Columbia’s School of Engineering. Fil obtained his master’s degree in engineering at NYU Brooklyn Polytech and went to work initially in the healthcare arena at Memorial Sloan Kettering working on a prototype Brain Scanner and later joined the firm full time. Both Chris and Fil became licensed in New York and became principals of the firm. They went on to obtain licenses in 23 additional states in the US.
Initially working on modest residential projects, the firm expanded steadily, adding staff and taking on more complicated projects. SKE was among the first firms to adopt Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), which streamlined the design process and paved the way to allow the firm to expand its scope to include retail projects such as multi-state chain stores, large commercial buildings, industrial plants, multi-story residential buildings, educational and specialized medical facilities.
